In Miami-Dade County, you
might have seen a collection of houses floating above the shallow water, that
is, it was a mile off the coast of Cape Florida on the edge of Biscayne Bay. As
being known, this was to call the community of Stiltsville that was a group of
wooden houses and shacks standing on wood and reinforced concrete pilings. To
do such these buildings, this might be set up towards the end of the prohibition
era. This was required allegedly to facilitate gambling, being been not allowed
within a mile offshore from the coast.
The event mentioned that the
first shack on stilts was built by "Crawfish" Eddie Walker in the
early 1930's. However, some historians affirmed there were shacks out in
"the flats", as the area was recognized, being been in the early
1922. As well known a gambling den, Crawfish Eddie sold bait and beer from his
shack. This was included with his chilau, crawfish chowder made of crawfish and
he caught under his shack. In several years ago, Eddie Walker's shack was
joined by many of clubs and then Stiltsville was apparently a hotbed for booze
and illegal gambling. Credit: amusingplanet
