Bo-Kaap is one of the oldest
and the most attractive residential areas in the South African city of Cape
Town. This is located on the slopes of Signalize Hill above the city center.
The area is defined by brightly colored homes and romantic cobble stoned
streets that affiliate stake to the 18th century.
The residents of Bo-Kaap are
recognized as descendants of slaves. Those slaves were imported by the Dutch
from Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and from different countries between
the 16th and 17th centuries. These slaves were titled
"Cape Malays", modify though not all of them were of Malaysian
descent. After the British seized Cape Town from the Dutch in period of 1795, a
series of positive changes occurred over the next 4 decades associated with
religious freedom, the abolition of the slaveholding trade and eventually, an
end to subjection. The free slaves formed a new community at Bo-Kaap, which
justified today, is referred to as the Malaya Quarter. Credit:
